Hua Hin is a long-established Thai beach resort on the western side of the Gulf of Thailand, favoured by the royal family and Bangkok weekenders. It is calmer and more genteel than Pattaya — long beaches, golf courses, seafood night markets and a relaxed, family-friendly feel.
Where to stay
The town centre near the night market is convenient and walkable. The beachfront south of town has the bigger resorts. Khao Takiab, at the southern end, is quieter with a hilltop temple and monkeys.
Top things to do
The long main beach and horse-riding on the sand, the buzzing Hua Hin Night Market and Cicada arts market, the quirky Maruekhathaiyawan summer palace, vineyards inland, and some of Thailand’s best golf. Families enjoy the water parks.
Getting there from Pattaya
Hua Hin sits across the gulf from Pattaya. The scenic route is the cross-gulf ferry (when running) which avoids Bangkok; otherwise it is a road trip via Bangkok (around 4–5 hours). Confirm current ferry operations before relying on them.
Best time to visit
The cool, dry season (November to February) is best. Hua Hin is relatively dry year-round compared with some coasts, though the wet season brings some rain.
Food & nightlife
Excellent seafood and night-market eating are the highlights. Nightlife is low-key and relaxed — beach bars and live music rather than big clubs.
Day trips
The Sam Roi Yot National Park, Pranburi’s quieter beaches, and the cave temples and viewpoints nearby make good excursions.
