Start with your room quote, then add meals, local journeys, paid outings and a separate nightlife limit. That produces a more useful Pattaya budget than one citywide average. The spending bands below are illustrative allowances, not a new price survey or a promise that a particular room or meal is available. Dated operator prices are identified separately. Flights, insurance, entry costs and shopping need their own lines.

The 30-second answer

Excluding flights, these are three possible per-person spending envelopes:

StyleDaily budget (approx.)What it looks like
Backpacker฿1,500–2,500Hostel or fan-room guesthouse, street food, baht buses, beach days, a couple of local beers
Mid-range฿3,000–6,0003–4 star hotel with pool, mix of Thai restaurants and Western meals, Grab rides, a paid activity most days
Comfort฿8,000+Beachfront resort or 5-star, restaurant dining, private transfers, golf, spa, cocktails

A couple sharing one room can reduce the accommodation cost per person; meal and admission costs still apply to each traveller. Use the Pattaya budget calculator to set nights, travellers and style, then read its assumptions. Its mid-range model uses ฿1,800 per room/night and ฿900 food, ฿250 transport and ฿500 activities per person/day: ฿2,550 per person/day for two sharing. That is a leaner example than the ฿3,000–6,000 envelope above, which leaves more room for expensive outings. Neither is a quote. The calculator assumes one spending day per night; add arrival/departure spending and airport transfers yourself.

Accommodation: the biggest lever

Use these nightly room allowances to filter an initial hotel search, then replace them with the total for your actual dates and occupancy. They do not guarantee room condition, star rating or inclusions.

  • Hostels and guesthouses (฿300–800/night allowance). Search dorm beds and basic private rooms separately: a dorm price is per bed, while a private-room quote depends on occupancy and fan/aircon choice.
  • Budget hotels (฿800–1,500 allowance). Compare the exact road, aircon, bathroom and cancellation terms. Soi Buakhao is one area to investigate; an inexpensive room beside late-night venues may not fit a quiet trip.
  • Mid-range (฿1,500–3,000 allowance). Compare hotels with the pool and room layout you need in Jomtien, Pratumnak or Central Pattaya. Breakfast may be a separate rate plan: do not assume it is included.
  • Comfort and resort (฿3,000–10,000+ allowance). For Wong Amat or Na Jomtien resorts and central hotel towers, compare the booked room category, meals, extra-bed charges and transfer costs. A high room rate does not establish what is included.

Food: from ฿60 plates to resort brunches

These per-meal allowances help choose a spending style; they are not verified menus for every venue. Read the actual menu, portion size, tax and service-charge terms before ordering.

  • Street food and food courts: ฿60–100 per plate. Pad krapow, noodle soup, som tam from a market stall or a mall food court. Two or three of these a day and your food budget barely registers.
  • Local Thai restaurants: ฿100–250 per dish. Sit-down Thai places with menus in English, cold aircon and bigger portions. A full meal with a drink lands around ฿200–350.
  • Western restaurants: ฿250–600 per main. Pattaya’s huge expat population means good pizza, burgers, steaks and Sunday roasts everywhere — at two to four times the price of Thai food. A burger and a beer is easily ฿400–500.
  • Resort and fine dining: ฿800–2,000+ per head. Beachfront seafood, hotel buffets and rooftop restaurants. Worth doing once or twice; ruinous as a routine.

A realistic daily food spend: ฿300–500 eating local, ฿700–1,200 mixing Thai and Western, ฿1,500+ if you mostly eat Western or in hotels. See our Thai food guide for what to order first.

Drinks: where budgets quietly die

Use these as example allowances and check the menu’s serving size. Bottles, draught measures and promotions are not interchangeable.

  • Convenience store beer: ฿40–60 allowance per drink. Check the actual can or bottle size and shelf price; this is not a quoted large-bottle price.
  • Beer bars and sports bars: ฿70–120 allowance for a draught or small bottle. Use the venue’s current menu and happy-hour conditions rather than assuming a fixed discount.
  • Cocktail bars and rooftops: ฿200–400 per cocktail.
  • Clubs: ฿150–300 per drink, sometimes with a cover charge of ฿200–500 that includes a drink or two.

Three local beers a day is ฿250; three cocktails in a club is ฿1,000. Multiply by a week and you see why two travellers with identical hotels can have wildly different totals.

Transport: famously cheap

Getting around is one of Pattaya’s best bargains — full details in our getting around guide.

  • Baht bus (songthaew): ฿15–20 depending on the fixed route and distance. The blue pick-up trucks are the city’s bus network; hop on, ring the bell, then pay when you get off. How they work (and how not to get overcharged) is covered in our baht bus guide.
  • Grab/Bolt: use the live quote for each planned car journey. For an initial worksheet, try ฿150–300 per short car ride as an allowance, then replace it with your route/product quote. Longer resort journeys, demand, waiting and tolls can move it outside that range; no fixed surge multiplier is assumed.
  • Motorbike taxis (street): ฿40–100 for short hops — agree the price first.
  • Scooter rental: ~฿200–350 per day for a 125cc model, less by the week or month. You need a motorbike-endorsed licence and a helmet, and insurance realities matter — read our driving and rental guide before you hand over your passport (don’t — leave a cash deposit instead).

For a day using only fixed-route songthaews, an illustrative ฿100 transport allowance may suffice. A day with two car journeys needs a different calculation: two assumed ฿200 rides mean ฿400 for the group before any additional journeys. The calculator’s ฿250 mid-range per-person allowance is a planning average, not a promise of two car rides at that price.

Activities: what the fun costs

Price the actual outings you want rather than assuming one admission allowance covers every attraction. The named Ramayana offer below was checked on 7 September 2026; other broad bands are worksheet allowances unless separately sourced.

  • Koh Larn: start with a ฿100 return-ferry allowance per person, then replace it with the posted fares for both crossings. Add island transport, food and chair hire separately; ฿100 is a worksheet allowance, not a ticket price or ceiling. Historical reports differ: the government’s 30 March report postponed an increase, an older independent guide lists ฿30, and April news discussed ฿40. Rereading the government and guide pages on 13 September did not establish today’s operator tariff. Confirm the fare and return sailing at the pier; get a separate quote for a speedboat. Use the Koh Larn guide to choose your pier and beach.
  • Ramayana: ฿1,099 online / ฿1,199 walk-in for the tourist full-day ticket. The official ticket page lists these for guests at least 106 cm tall, with the offer valid through 31 October 2026. Its ฿799 online / ฿949 walk-in offer requires eligible Thai-resident/expat documentation; it is not the ordinary tourist price. Add return transport, food and any rentals or paid extras. Compare other parks by their own ticket products in the water parks guide.
  • Golf: ฿1,500–5,000 green fees plus caddy fee (฿300–500, tip on top). Sports-bar golf societies get cheaper rates; see the Pattaya golf guide.
  • Diving: ฿2,500–3,900 for a two-dive day trip or introductory programme, depending on experience and equipment; courses cost more. Details in our diving and snorkelling guide.
  • Other paid attractions: start with a ฿500–1,500 allowance per outing, then replace it with the chosen product. Nong Nooch admission, Sanctuary of Truth visits and cabaret seat packages are different purchases; premium seating or bundled meals can exceed that allowance.
  • Massage: ฿300–500 for an hour of Thai massage in a clean, ordinary shop; hotel spas charge ฿1,000+.

One paid activity a day plus a massage is roughly ฿1,000–2,000 on top of your base budget.

The honest extras: nightlife spending

Pattaya’s nightlife is a major reason many visitors come, and it deserves an honest line in the budget rather than a wink. The short version: bar and entertainment costs vary enormously, and this is the single most common place first-timers blow their plan. A quiet night in a live-music pub might cost ฿500. A big night in the nightlife areas — cover charges, rounds of drinks, drinks bought for staff (a standard, priced part of the business model in many bars, typically ฿150–250 each), late-night food and rides home — can run into thousands of baht without feeling extravagant at the time.

If nightlife is part of your plan, budget for it deliberately: decide a nightly cap, carry that much cash and no more, and count it as its own line, not as “drinks”. Travellers who do this come home on budget; travellers who don’t, don’t.

When you go changes what you pay

Compare the same room and cancellation terms across your possible dates. Christmas, New Year, Thai holidays, weekends and events can change availability; there is no verified citywide 20–40% hotel premium to apply to every booking. A rainy-season offer can reduce the room cost while adding transport or indoor-activity spending. Use the best time to visit guide for seasonal trade-offs, then compare actual quotes. For a stress test, add 20% to your own room allowance and see whether the trip still works; that is a contingency scenario, not a forecast of hotel pricing.

A worked beach-day example for two sharing: assume a ฿2,000 room with breakfast explicitly included (฿1,000 each), lunch ฿100, return ferry allowance ฿100, island transport/chair allowance ฿200, massage ฿350, dinner and drinks ฿400, later bar spending ฿300 and mainland transport share ฿200. That totals ฿2,650 per person before a buffer. These are chosen allowances, not venue quotations. Adding 15% gives about ฿3,050; replacing the beach outing with a water park requires replacing its admission and transport lines, not simply adding the word “activity.”

Worked totals: 3 days and 7 days

Per person, excluding flights, assuming shared mid-range/comfort rooms are split two ways. All approximate.

TripBackpackerMid-rangeComfort
3 days฿4,500–7,500฿9,000–18,000฿24,000+
7 days฿10,500–17,500฿21,000–42,000฿56,000+

Convert the baht total using the rate available to you when paying; the Bank of Thailand reference is context rather than your card or cash-counter quote. Airport buses and private cars need separate allowances: use the airport transport guide for the relevant terminal and operator, then add the onward ride from the bus stop or the actual car quote. A single ฿300–800 band does not cover every transfer product. Add a 10–15% contingency of your own choosing, plus spending on arrival or departure days not covered by your hotel nights.

Cash, cards and not getting stung

Pattaya runs on cash more than you’d expect. Cards work in hotels, malls and proper restaurants, but street food, baht buses, markets and most bars are cash-only. Thai ATM fees vary by bank and card network: current published examples run from ฿220 to ฿350 per foreign-card withdrawal, so make fewer, larger withdrawals — and use the money-changer booths for the best rates on notes you brought (our where to change money guide names the good ones). Always choose to be charged in baht, not your home currency, when a card terminal or ATM offers the choice; the “convenience” conversion rate is poor. Longer-staying visitors should read our banking in Pattaya guide, and everyone should skim tipping and money etiquette — tipping is appreciated but modest here.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pattaya cheaper than Phuket? Generally yes — one traveller-spend comparison averages Pattaya at $89 per person per day against Phuket at $133, or roughly one-third lower. Accommodation creates much of that gap, while Pattaya’s fixed-route songthaews now cost ฿15–20. Food and attraction prices vary independently. Full head-to-head in Pattaya vs Phuket.

How much cash should I carry per day? Around ฿2,000–3,000 covers a typical mid-range day’s cash spending; keep the rest in the hotel safe or on card.

Is Pattaya cheap to stay long-term? Different question, different numbers — see our cost of living guide for monthly budgets.

The original source checks were made in July 2026; Ramayana admission and the retained Pattaya Mail reports were rechecked on 7 September. The ferry context was reconciled on 13 September using the government postponement report and the older independent guide. That correction is not a new operator fare check or a fresh survey of other costs. General spending allowances are editorial examples. Start your own estimate in the budget calculator, compare its assumptions with your actual room and activity quotes, and keep a separate transfer and contingency line.

Useful to know

  • The room and nightlife choices move the total far more than street food or local transport.
  • Use ฿100 per person only as an initial return-ferry allowance; replace it with the posted fares for both crossings. Island transport and food are separate.
  • Foreign-card ATM charges are not uniform: current published examples run from ฿220 to ฿350 per withdrawal.
  • Pay in baht when an ATM or card terminal offers a home-currency conversion; the displayed convenience rate is set separately.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Pattaya trip cost per day?

For planning, try ฿1,500–2,500 per person/day for a backpacker-style trip, ฿3,000–6,000 for a mid-range trip or ฿8,000 and up for a resort-and-activities trip, excluding flights. These are illustrative spending envelopes, not measured averages or minimum required amounts. Replace the room, ticket and transfer allowances with quotes for your dates.

Is Pattaya cheaper than Phuket?

Generally, yes. One current traveller-spend comparison averages Pattaya at $89 per person per day against Phuket at $133, putting Pattaya roughly one-third lower in that dataset. Accommodation creates most of the visible gap. The comparison's transport averages are much closer, so do not assume every individual ride or activity will be cheaper.

How much cash should I bring to Pattaya?

Plan around ฿2,000–3,000 in daily cash if street food, markets, songthaews and bars are part of the day, then adjust to your own budget. Foreign-card ATM fees vary: Kasikornbank publishes ฿220, while Krungsri lists ฿250 for Visa, JCB and UnionPay and ฿350 for Mastercard. Fewer, larger withdrawals usually reduce repeated local fees.

Can I pay by card in Pattaya?

Hotels, malls, chain restaurants, supermarkets and bigger tour operators take cards. Street food, baht buses, markets, small bars and most small shops are cash-only, and some smaller places add a card surcharge. Thai QR payment is everywhere but usually needs a Thai bank account.
