Free things to do in Pattaya

Pattaya's free sights are its viewpoints, its hilltop temples, its public beaches and its evening markets. Pattaya Viewpoint and Big Buddha Hill on Pratumnak Hill, the Khao Chi Chan Buddha image in the south and every public beach cost nothing to enter; Thepprasit and Jomtien's night markets charge no entry. What you pay for is the ride there, a beach chair and anything you buy.

Viewpoints and hilltop temples

Pattaya Viewpoint

The lookout at the top of Pratumnak Hill, on Phra Tamnak Road, looks north over the whole curve of Pattaya Bay. The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists it as free, and Thailand's DASTA tourism agency gives opening from 07:00 to 22:00 daily, with parking and binoculars. Sunset is the busy hour; early morning is cooler and quieter. See Pattaya Viewpoint.

Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai)

A working temple on the same hill, about 10 minutes by songthaew from Beach Road, where a staircase of around 100 steps lined with naga serpents climbs to a golden seated Buddha about 18 metres high. Two tour operators' guides checked on 1 October 2026 describe entry as free, and no official page lists a fee. Cover shoulders and knees; a donation is your choice. Its hours differ between listings, so go in daylight. See Big Buddha Hill.

Khao Chi Chan

A seated Buddha image more than 100 metres high, inlaid with gold on a limestone cliff in the countryside south of Na Jomtien. The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists entry as free. It is about 30 minutes by car from central Pattaya, beyond the songthaew routes, so the ride is the cost: share a car, or pair it with a paid day at Nong Nooch nearby. See Khao Chi Chan.

The public beaches and the beachfront walks

Pattaya's beaches are public. Pattaya Mail reported in July 2026 that the city's enforcement targets unlicensed rental businesses and that visitors may bring their own mat, chair and umbrella. Licensed operators rent chairs and umbrellas, and no single price is published, so ask the total before you sit.

  • [Pattaya Beach](/beaches/pattaya-beach/): about 3 km along Beach Road, from North to South Pattaya. The walk along the sand and the beachfront path is the city's free evening outing.
  • [Jomtien Beach](/beaches/jomtien-beach/): about 6 km of sand south of Pratumnak Hill, for a long free day. Phase 2 of its sand works runs until February 2027, so pick a stretch away from the machinery.
  • [Wong Amat Beach](/beaches/wong-amat-beach/): calmer sand in the north, reached by public lanes from Naklua Soi 18 and Naklua Soi 16.
  • [Cosy Beach](/beaches/cosy-beach/): a small cove below Pratumnak Hill, down a flight of stairs from Rajchawaroon Road, close to the viewpoint and Big Buddha Hill.
  • [Naklua Beach](/beaches/naklua-beach/): the working shore of old Naklua, not a swimming beach: fishing boats, the Lan Pho fresh market and Lan Pho Park by the sea.

Swim only where the flags allow, and read the notices for jellyfish in the monsoon months: staying safe in Pattaya has the routine.

Markets to walk in the evening

Walking a market costs nothing; carry small notes for what you buy, and ask the price before anything is weighed or bagged.

  • [Thepprasit Night Market](/things-to-do/thepprasit-night-market/): the largest evening market, off Sukhumvit Road, with free entry. Two July 2026 listings give Friday to Sunday, about 17:00 to 23:00, while Google Maps shows every day, so check before a weekday trip.
  • Jomtien Night Market: a smaller market on Jomtien Beach Road, opposite the beach, with no entry charge; July 2026 listings gave daily trading from 17:00 to 23:00. See markets in Pattaya.

Free festivals on the beach

Some of the year's biggest events cost nothing to watch from the sand, though they bring the largest crowds and road closures.

  • The Pattaya International Fireworks Festival: scheduled for Friday 27 and Saturday 28 November 2026 along Pattaya Beach. Watching from the sand is free; a hotel or table with a view is a separate booking.
  • Pattaya Countdown: the public concerts on Pattaya Beach were free at Pattaya Countdown 2026, from 29 to 31 December 2025. See New Year's Eve in Pattaya.
  • The rest of the year: Wan Lai, the Pattaya Music Festival in March and Loy Krathong in November are public events; dates are in the events calendar.

Not free, or not confirmed

These are sometimes described as free. Check before you plan a day around them.

  • [Pattaya Floating Market](/things-to-do/pattaya-floating-market/): the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Tokyo listing gives no entry fee either way, and activities such as the 100-baht zipline cost extra.
  • [Swiss Sheep Farm](/things-to-do/swiss-sheep-farm-pattaya/): only a summary of visitor reviews says there is no entry fee, and animal feed costs 20 baht; confirm with the farm.
  • [Sanctuary of Truth](/things-to-do/sanctuary-of-truth/): a paid museum, 500 baht for adults by day, though children under 110 cm go free.
  • Beach chairs: the sand is free, the chair and umbrella are not.

A free day on shared rides

Morning: walk Pattaya Beach while it is cool, then ride a route songthaew over the hill to Jomtien Beach, 15 baht for a trip up to 10 km, and spend the late morning on the sand with your own mat.

Afternoon: rest in the shade, then ride up Pratumnak Hill for Big Buddha Hill and Pattaya Viewpoint at sunset. A shared songthaew may not climb to the entrances, so agree any fare for a detour first.

Evening: on a market night, walk Thepprasit Night Market; otherwise Jomtien Night Market is by the beach. Beyond the rides and what you eat, the day costs nothing. For three days in the same spirit, see Pattaya on a budget.
