Koh Chang is Thailand’s second-largest island and the main island destination in the Mu Ko Chang marine-park group. TAT says about 70 percent of the island is rainforest and highlights Hat Sai Khao, Laem Bang Bao and Klong Plu Waterfall. The west coast concentrates many stays and beaches, while the island’s size makes a single beach description too narrow for planning.
Where to base a stay
White Sand Beach, Kai Bae, Klong Prao and Lonely Beach serve different trip styles, from easier hotel and dining access to a more social backpacker profile. TAT’s destination page also lists the west-coast road linking major visitor areas. Choose the base by the beach, transfer time and planned boat trips rather than assuming the whole island is one walkable resort strip.
The island’s useful non-beach activities are equally specific. TAT lists snorkelling, diving, camping and jungle hiking, while Klong Plu Waterfall and Laem Bang Bao provide named stops. The Japanese TAT page also describes mangrove activity and gives Ban Salak Kok as an eastern-community option, so the itinerary can include forest, water and local fishing landscapes.
Ferry approach and a source contradiction
The old wording treated Laem Ngop as the only ferry point. The reviewed sources show why that is too broad: TAT’s Ko Chang page describes shuttle connections to ferry docks at Laem Ngop, while the Trat provincial notice identifies the Ao Thammachat ferry route to Koh Chang. The Japanese TAT page lists Natural Bay to Ao Sapparot and Centrepoint to Dan Kao, with approximate sailing durations in its access table. Use the pier named on the current booking, not a generic Laem Ngop label, and do not rely on the old 3 to 4 hour Pattaya estimate without a live route check.
TAT’s Trat page also warns that southwest monsoon conditions can limit sea transport, especially from May to October, even though Koh Chang remains a year-round destination. Check the operator, weather and last onward transfer before committing to a same-day connection.
Food and best fit
Seafood, beach restaurants and relaxed bars fit the island’s main visitor zones. Choose Koh Chang for an overnight or longer escape with beaches, rainforest and water activities. It is a weaker fit for a one-night plan that leaves no margin for road traffic, ferry changes or weather.
