Trat is most useful when treated as both a provincial town and a transfer point. The Tourism Authority of Thailand identifies the city as a primary launching point for Koh Chang, while its wider province combines island beaches, fishing, fruit growing, gem markets and Cambodian-border trade.

What to do before the ferry

Mueang Trat has more to offer than a transfer van. The Japanese TAT guide points to temples, the City Pillar, markets, mangrove areas and local transport. The Trat City Municipality page places Trat City Museum on Santisuk Road near the provincial hall and the King Rama V monument, with a published Tuesday-to-Friday 09:00-16:00 schedule in the reviewed listing.

Laem Ngop is another distinct stop. TAT’s Japanese guide places it about 30 kilometres from Trat town and describes a shared-songthaew connection from the municipal market. It also identifies a viewpoint, a naval-history museum and Ban Nam Chiao nearby. Do not treat Laem Ngop and Laem Sok as interchangeable pier names.

Island logistics

Boonsiri’s route page documents a shuttle from Trat town to its Laem Sok check-in and catamaran service from Laem Sok to Koh Mak and Koh Kood. That is operator-specific evidence, not a universal Trat ferry timetable. Confirm the pier, check-in time and onward hotel transfer on the date of travel.

The main contradiction is seasonal. TAT says the southwest monsoon can make western-coast conditions wet and can limit sea transport, especially from May to October, while also noting that Koh Chang normally remains accessible. A listed route therefore does not guarantee a same-day sailing. Build a mainland buffer and check the operator before leaving town.

Getting there from Pattaya

This guide does not preserve a fixed Pattaya-to-Trat duration because the reviewed sources describe the destination and island connections rather than a current door-to-door timetable. Plan the road leg separately, then allow time for the correct pier or an overnight in Trat when a boat departure matters.

Choose Trat when the journey benefits from a mainland pause, local markets or a carefully planned island transfer. Skip a rushed town visit if the only goal is the beach; in that case, arrange the correct ferry connection first.
