Does Ayutthaya work as a day trip?
Yes, by car. Route planning puts the historical park about 204 km from central Pattaya, around 2 hours 20 minutes without traffic, which leaves four or five hours among the ruins on a day that starts early. Count on more time around Bangkok, where the road passes through the city's outer suburbs.
Without a car it does not: the coaches leave Pattaya in the afternoon and evening, and a route through Bangkok means a change there each way. If the old capital is the point of your trip, a night in Ayutthaya, or a visit from Bangkok, gives it more time.
Getting there from Pattaya
By car with a driver: the shortest route on route planning takes Highway 7 towards Bangkok, then the outer ring road (Highway 9) around the east of the city, and Highway 32 north to Ayutthaya. On 1 October 2026 the booking site 12Go listed private cars from Pattaya to Ayutthaya from 2,552 baht one way. For a day hire, agree in writing the hours, the stops, tolls, parking and the time you leave Ayutthaya.
By coach: on the same day 12Go listed three Chan Tour express coaches from Pattaya, at 13:15, 18:20 and 19:45, each taking about 4 hours 45 minutes. They suit a night or two in Ayutthaya, not a day trip. It listed no train from Pattaya.
On a tour: tour sellers in Pattaya offer Ayutthaya days. Before you pay, ask how long you have at the ruins, which sites and tickets are included, and whether lunch or a shopping stop takes up the time.
On 28 September 2026 the UK Foreign Office reported severe flooding in Bangkok and the neighbouring provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan, with road closures possible. Check the news and the route on the morning you leave.
Tickets and opening hours
The Fine Arts Department runs the historical park. The main ruins each have their own ticket, and a combined ticket covers several of them. The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre's museum database lists 50 baht a site or 220 baht for the combined ticket for foreign visitors, 10 baht or 40 baht for Thai visitors, and opening from 08:00 to 18:30 daily.
That listing is not dated, and the Fine Arts Department's own fee page could not be loaded on 1 October 2026, so treat the prices as the last ones listed and check at the first ticket booth. Ask which ruins the combined ticket covers before you buy it.
The department sometimes waives its fees: it opened its historical parks free of charge on 31 December 2025 and 1 January 2026, for example.
A realistic plan for the day
- Leave Pattaya at about 06:30, to pass Bangkok before the worst of the morning traffic and arrive by about 09:00.
- Start at Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the temple of the old royal palace, while it is cooler.
- Walk or drive the short way to Wat Mahathat and Wat Ratchaburana, which face each other across the road.
- Stop for lunch and shade in the middle of the day.
- In the afternoon, drive to Wat Chaiwatthanaram on the riverbank west of the island, or to Wat Phra Ram, if you still have the energy.
- Leave by 15:00 to 15:30 to be back in Pattaya around 18:00, before traffic around Bangkok builds.
The ruins are hot and open, with little shade between them: carry water, a hat and sun cream, and plan on fewer sites rather than rushing. These are religious sites as well as ruins, so cover shoulders and knees and don't climb on the monuments; Thai etiquette covers the rest.
Who it suits
- First-time visitors who want to see Thailand's history and will not travel further north on this trip.
- Photographers and history readers, for whom the ruins are worth the long day.
- Groups with a car and driver, who can split the driving time and choose the stops.
It suits small children and anyone who struggles in the heat less well: a long car day and hot open ruins add up. Closer to Pattaya, Legend Siam has a replica of an Ayutthaya temple, and the temples and cultural sights list has more near town.
Questions
How far is Ayutthaya from Pattaya?
About 204 km by the shortest road route to the historical park, around 2 hours 20 minutes without traffic, according to route planning checked on 1 October 2026. Traffic around Bangkok can add a good deal to that.
Is there a train or bus from Pattaya to Ayutthaya?
No direct train: 12Go listed none on 1 October 2026. It listed three Chan Tour express coaches a day, leaving Pattaya at 13:15, 18:20 and 19:45 and taking about 4 hours 45 minutes, which suits a stay rather than a day trip.
Can I combine Ayutthaya and Bangkok in one day?
Not well: each is a full day on its own, and Bangkok's traffic sits between them. If you are heading to Bangkok anyway, visit Ayutthaya from there; for a day in the capital from Pattaya, see a Bangkok day trip.
Can I see the ruins lit up at night?
In some cool seasons. Last season, from December 2025 to February 2026, the Tourism Authority of Thailand announced evening openings from 16:30 to 21:30 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, with Wat Mahathat, Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Phra Ram, Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Chaiwatthanaram lit. No schedule for the 2026–27 season had been published when checked on 1 October 2026, so do not plan a late return to Pattaya around it until one is.
