A Pattaya Diving Trip

Pattaya works well as a diving base when convenience matters more than postcard visibility. Operators run reef, island and wreck trips from the city and farther south, while beginners can use the same holiday for an introductory dive or training. Four days is enough only if the timetable respects weather, skill level and the no-fly interval.

Treat two dive days as the working maximum until the centre has matched the schedule to qualifications and onward travel. A cancelled boat should become a dry day, not pressure to accept a marginal site or compress the surface interval.

Before day one: choose the operator, not the cheapest number

Read the local diving overview, then contact more than one centre. Ask who certifies the instructor, how many divers go with each guide, whether oxygen is carried on the boat and how an emergency transfer would work. Those are not fussy questions: current UK travel advice specifically tells divers in Thailand to check operator credentials, equipment, onboard oxygen and access to a hyperbaric chamber.

Send certification details and the date of the last logged dive before paying. A certified diver returning after a long break may need a refresher; a non-diver needs an introductory programme or full course, not a place on an ordinary fun-dive boat. Ask for the cancellation policy in writing because the operator, not the itinerary, decides whether wind and sea conditions are acceptable.

Day 1: paperwork, theory and equipment

Base near the selected shop rather than choosing a hotel at the opposite end of town. Jomtien is convenient for many southern departures, but the actual meeting point matters more than the neighbourhood label.

Complete the medical questionnaire honestly. PADI says a beginner may need a doctor’s statement depending on the answers, so resolving that question at home is better than losing a day in Pattaya. The afternoon is for e-learning review, confined-water skills or checking mask, fins, exposure protection and weights. Certified divers should bring a certification card and logbook or digital records.

Do not attach a big night out to day one. Early boat meetings and dehydration make poor partners. Confirm what food, drinking water, transfers, equipment and marine fees are included, then set out only what the operator asks for.

Day 2: beginner training or the first dive day

For a beginner, a Discover Scuba Diving experience includes a briefing and basic skills in pool-like conditions before an optional open-water dive. PADI caps that open-water portion at 12 metres; it is an experience, not a certification. Anyone wanting independent certification should book the operator’s complete course and confirm exactly how classroom, confined-water and open-water work fits into the four days.

Certified divers can use this as the first two-dive day. One Pattaya operator’s July 2026 price page listed two local dives with lunch at ฿2,700 using personal gear or ฿3,000 with rental gear. The same page listed Samae San at ฿2,900 or ฿3,200. Treat these as one operator’s current examples, not a citywide tariff, and reconfirm before booking.

Day 3: reefs, islands or a wreck

Let the dive centre select sites for the sea state and the group’s qualifications. Pattaya has near-island reefs and wreck options, but a wreck is not automatically suitable for a new or rusty diver. Ask whether the planned dive is outside the certification depth or requires a speciality, and accept a reef substitution without argument when conditions change.

A normal boat day includes more waiting than photographs suggest: loading, briefing, travel, kitting up, surface intervals and the return to the pier. Take sun protection and dry clothes, but keep valuables minimal. Visibility changes with weather and site, so obtain the operator’s recent report rather than relying on a seasonal promise.

Log the dives that evening. A simple dinner is enough; Bang Saray can work for seafood if the boat finishes south, while Jomtien is easier when the group returns to town.

Day 4: decide around the flight, not appetite

This final day stays deliberately conditional. Divers Alert Network recommends a minimum 12-hour pre-flight interval after one no-decompression dive, 18 hours after multiple dives in a day or diving over several days, and 24 hours after mandatory-decompression diving. Longer intervals reduce risk.

If the flight or high-altitude journey falls inside the applicable window, do not make a final dive. Use the morning for the beach, a pool and equipment drying. If departure is later and the operator confirms the schedule leaves enough time, a final guided dive can fit—but the dive computer may require a longer interval and takes priority.

What this trip suits

This plan suits beginners who have completed theory in advance and certified divers who want convenient day boats without changing islands. Experienced divers chasing consistently clear water or a wreck-heavy technical schedule should skip the generic four-day plan and arrange a specialist programme. Non-diving companions also need a separate daytime plan because boat access varies. The sensible version ends with spare time, not a sprint from the pier to the airport.
