Thai Blind Massage Institute

The Thai Blind Massage Institute (TBMI) is one of Pattaya's most distinctive places for a massage: a charity project on Thappraya Road, in the Jomtien Complex building, staffed almost entirely by blind and visually-impaired therapists who 'see' with their hands. It was opened in 1999 by Khun Sayan, a former monk, with backing from a friend, Mr Henri; six units in the condotel were converted into the institute, and its therapists are trained in Chiang Mai and hold certificates for at least 300 hours of massage education. The idea is twofold — genuinely skilled, anatomy-focused therapeutic massage, and dignified employment for blind masseurs — and it has earned a long-standing reputation as one of the best-value serious massages in town. The menu covers traditional Thai massage, oil and aromatherapy massage, herbal treatments and foot reflexology, usually offered in 60-, 90- and 120-minute sessions; you can specify pressure (soft, medium or strong) and request a male or female therapist. This is a therapeutic massage house, not a spa with pools and packages — the setting is simple, with rooms ranging from single beds to shared mat rooms — but regulars rate the standard of the work highly and prices sit well below the resort spas. It's popular, so booking a specific therapist by phone is wise; walk-ins are often possible too.
