Koh Tao is a small Gulf island whose identity is tied to scuba training, snorkelling and marine conservation. TAT places it 45 kilometres north of Koh Phangan and describes it as a leading Thai diving destination. Thailand.go.th names Sairee Beach, Koh Nang Yuan and dive areas such as Chumphon Rock, Japanese Garden and Shark Island, giving a more useful starting point than a generic island checklist.
Diving and non-diving days
New divers can compare schools and course dates, while certified divers can use the island as a base for boat sites. The government tourism page also describes coral, fish and turtle habitat, and TAT warns visitors not to touch marine life or leave waste in the water. Treat those as part of the trip plan, not decorative advice.
Non-divers are not limited to watching other people enter the sea. Sairee Beach is the longest beach named by Thailand.go.th, and the same page places Koh Nang Yuan about 480 metres from Koh Tao. Boat trips around the bays, a viewpoint walk, yoga and an unhurried beach day give a complete visit without a dive certification.
Ferry route contradiction
The old wording promised a flight through Koh Samui or Surat Thani followed by a ferry. The reviewed sources are more specific but do not agree on one universal approach: TAT says Koh Tao is closer to Chumphon and recommends a Chumphon boat, while Lomprayah’s booking system exposes a date-specific Koh Tao to Surat Thani route and warns that trip times may need to be loaded for the selected date. The supported advice is therefore to choose the mainland or island gateway after checking the operator, not to treat one flight-and-ferry combination as standard.
From Pattaya, allow a full travel day and keep the flight, transfer and boat legs separate. A current booking page matters more than a remembered duration or fare, especially when weather affects Gulf sailings.
Season, roads and staying
TAT and Thailand.go.th both point to February through April as a strong period, while the government page identifies November through January as the Gulf monsoon period. Those dates are planning signals rather than a promise of clear seas. If hiring a motorbike, use extreme caution: TAT specifically flags island-road risk.
Stay near the beach or dive school that matches the trip rather than assuming every cove is equally convenient. Koh Tao suits travellers who want water time, compact island days and a social evening scene. It is a weaker fit for a tightly timed transfer or a holiday built around guaranteed boat departures.
