Before the resort
Before tourism, this coast in Bang Lamung district was home to fishing and farming communities. Naklua, north of today's centre, keeps more of that older shape in its lanes, markets and ties to the sea.
The trip from Bangkok took longer than it does now, and the shore had little of today's hotels and shops. Local people and a few visitors used the beach; it was not yet a resort.
How tourism grew
Research held by Chulalongkorn University traces international tourism in Pattaya to the years after the Second World War. It identifies American visitors, including military personnel in the Vietnam War era, as important to the resort's growth.
Visitors from Bangkok were part of the demand as well. Hotels, shops and transport grew around it, and the resort kept expanding after the war ended.
Bars and entertainment grew in the same years, and nightlife is still part of the city's image.
A city of its own from 1978
Growth outran the local administration. Until 1978 the area was run by a sanitation administration based in Naklua; an Act passed that year made Pattaya a city with its own special form of local government.
The first model used a city manager, and it has changed since as Thailand's elected local government has developed. Pattaya City marks its anniversary on 29 November.
Pattaya today
Pattaya is an urban resort rather than an island retreat: city beaches, malls, markets, shows and water parks sit among hotels, homes and busy roads. Pattaya City's own economic information puts tourism and services at the centre of the local economy.
Traffic, dense building and construction are part of daily life. If you want an undeveloped beach, the mainland may feel too built-up; if you value choice and convenience, the city makes sense quickly.
How the city fits together
Beach Road and Second Road run through the centre, Pratumnak Hill separates it from Jomtien, Naklua Road leads north, and Sukhumvit Road carries longer north-south trips on the inland side. Beach Road, Second Road and Third Road explained has the detail.

These are tendencies, not borders: a side street in the centre can be calm, and Jomtien can be busy at weekends.

Where can I see Pattaya's history?

Why do some addresses say Nong Prue or Bang Lamung?
Pattaya City lies in Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri province, and the resort that visitors call Pattaya spreads across several subdistricts, including Nong Prue. An address that names them can still be in Pattaya, so check the map pin rather than the label.
