How to use this comparison

Sightseeing and culture
Bangkok carries the cultural weight of a first trip. The Tourism Authority of Thailand's Bangkok guide names Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho among its historic temples, and adds palaces, museums, parks, markets and shopping centres.
Pattaya's sightseeing is lighter and more spread out: a viewpoint, a garden, a show or a water park, often a ride from the centre. It has temples too: see temples and culture in Pattaya.
If temples and history top your list, give Bangkok full days rather than one tired arrival night. If you already know Bangkok, Pattaya is the change of scene.
Beach days and a slower pace
This half of the trip belongs to Pattaya, since Bangkok is not a beach city. The choice is where to stay: the centre for everything close by, Jomtien for beach-led days, or Wong Amat and Naklua, where a resort carries more of the holiday. See where to stay in Pattaya.
The slower pace comes from that choice, not from the city itself. Central Pattaya has traffic, building work and late nights; a quieter area or a resort with its own grounds gives you the break.
Beach days also depend on the season. Bangkok's dry and wet months match Pattaya's, with more rain in the wet ones (see the table above); Pattaya's months are in the best time to visit.
The transfer between them
The road is the usual link. The Tourism Authority of Thailand puts the two about 150 km apart and gives roughly two hours by road, but that is a guide, not a door-to-door promise: traffic in both cities, your hotel's location and rest stops can stretch it.
The train is a weekend option. On 1 October 2026 the State Railway of Thailand's booking system listed rapid train 887 on Saturdays and Sundays, from Bangkok (Hua Lamphong) at 06:45 to Pattaya at 09:13, and train 888 back at 16:26, arriving at 18:55. It showed no train on the weekdays searched, so check the timetable before you plan on rail.
Airports of Thailand lists a direct bus between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Pattaya, and its page asks travellers to confirm fares because operators can change them: on 1 October 2026, Roong Reuang Coach listed 135 baht a seat to North Pattaya and 158 baht to Jomtien. A private car is simpler for two or more people with luggage, a late arrival or a hotel far from the bus stop.

How to split your nights
- A long weekend: choose one place. Checking out, transferring and checking in again eats into a short trip.
- Five nights: three in Bangkok and two in Pattaya, so Pattaya is more than a late arrival and an early checkout.
- Seven nights: four in Bangkok, for three full days after the arrival day, and three in Pattaya, for a beach day and an outing.
- Ten nights: five and five, or four in Bangkok and six in Pattaya when the coast is the main goal.
Put Bangkok first for a busy start and a slow finish by the sea. Reverse the order when you want a last night near the airport or a shopping day at the end.

You can, but hotel transfers and traffic make it a long day. It suits one fixed purpose, such as a single attraction, rather than a first look at the whole city. One or two nights let you see the coast at an easier pace; for a single day, follow 24 hours in Pattaya.
Is Pattaya cheaper than Bangkok?
Not consistently. Pattaya hotels can give more space or resort facilities for the money, but beachfront rooms, private cars and activities can erase any saving. Compare whole days: room, transfers, local rides, entry fees and meals where you will actually be.
