Pattaya or Krabi: which suits your trip

Choose Pattaya if your time is short, Bangkok is already on your route and your group wants plenty to do without changing hotels; choose Krabi if a holiday planned around boats and the sea is the point, and you have the nights to make the flight pay off.

Getting there changes the trip

Pattaya's advantage is its link with Bangkok. The Tourism Authority of Thailand puts it about 150 km south-east of the capital, roughly two hours by road, so two to four nights fit easily after Bangkok without another flight: see Suvarnabhumi airport to Pattaya.

Krabi has its own international airport, run by Thailand's Department of Airports; its live flight display is the place to check on the day you fly. For most short trips from Bangkok, flying is the practical way in, and going overland is a much bigger undertaking.

Add the transfer from the terminal to your base: landing at Krabi is not the same as arriving at your hotel. The journey is why Krabi rewards several nights, while Pattaya works as a short add-on.

Beaches and the sea

Krabi is on the Andaman coast of southern Thailand, and a Krabi holiday is planned around boats and the sea. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Ao Nang, about 20 km from Krabi town, as the best-known beach, and Railay for its limestone peaks and rock climbing; boat trips from Krabi town and Ao Nang run to Hong Island, Ko Phi Phi and other islands, and Ko Lanta is a larger island base of its own.

Pattaya's coast is convenient rather than remote. The central beach sits in the city, Jomtien has a longer beach-and-promenade rhythm, and Wong Amat has more of a resort feel: see Pattaya's beaches.

For an island day on Pattaya's side of the Gulf, see Koh Samet as a day trip from Pattaya.

Weather on two coasts

Pattaya and Krabi face different seas, so never carry one forecast over to the other. The Thai Meteorological Department publishes separate current and seven-day pages for Krabi and for Chon Buri, the province that includes Pattaya.

Krabi lies on the south-western coast, which the department describes as getting heavier rain during the south-west monsoon. Its 1981–2010 normals for the Krabi station show January and February as the driest months and August to October as the wettest, peaking at 323.5 mm in October, and every month from May to November averages more than 170 mm. Pattaya's months are in the best time to visit.

Boat days depend on the sea on the day. Follow local marine warnings and the operator's decision, and keep a spare day in your plan.

Families and mixed groups

Pattaya gives groups more fallbacks: gardens, shows, malls, museums and water parks when someone wants a break from the beach. See Pattaya with kids.

Krabi suits families who enjoy boats and can keep plans flexible. When several of the main outings depend on the sea, the weather matters more, so choose a base and transfers that leave room to adapt.

Questions

Can I combine Pattaya and Krabi in one holiday?

Yes, but they are not neighbouring resorts. Treat the move as a travel day, compare live flight and transfer options, and give Krabi enough nights for at least one boat day, with a spare day in case the sea is rough.

Which is cheaper, Pattaya or Krabi?

Neither reliably. On a Bangkok-based trip, Pattaya saves a domestic flight; Krabi adds the flight, baggage and a transfer, and boat days bring their own costs. Price the whole trip for the same dates and room standard before you decide.

Is Pattaya or Krabi better for a first trip to Thailand?

It depends on the rest of your route. Pattaya sits naturally beside Bangkok and has more to do on land; Krabi suits a longer trip with days on the water. With a week or less and a Bangkok arrival, Pattaya's shorter transfer leaves more of the week for the coast.

Can I fly from Pattaya to Krabi?

Not directly. U-Tapao, Pattaya's own airport, listed no Krabi flight on its domestic schedule when checked on 1 October 2026, only Chiang Mai, Phuket and Samui, so compare flights from Bangkok's airports. See U-Tapao airport to Pattaya.
