Pattaya or Hua Hin: which suits your trip

Choose Pattaya if you want a short break from Bangkok with beaches, attractions and plenty of choice close together; choose Hua Hin if you want a slower stay built around one long beach, a night market and a resort routine, with the train as well as the road from Bangkok.

The beach and the pace of the day

Pattaya's central bay is a city beach, with roads, malls, hotels and boats all part of the view. Jomtien Beach suits a longer beach-led day, and the northern beaches, such as Wong Amat Beach, are quieter. The beach you want may be a short ride from your hotel rather than a walk.

Hua Hin centres the holiday on a long mainland beach. The Tourism Authority of Thailand presents the town around its beach, night market, seafood and golf, and also points to Takiab Bay and outings inland.

That makes a simple routine easy to repeat: beach, pool, a meal and an evening walk, without planning each day as an excursion.

How much there is to do

Pattaya has the wider range. Gardens, museums, shows and water parks sit alongside the beaches, and a few days fill quickly, which suits groups whose members want different things.

Hua Hin's list is shorter but coherent: the beach, the night market, and nature and temple outings nearby. That suits travellers who would rather not plan every day, but less so a group that wants a different headline outing each morning.

Evenings follow the same pattern: Pattaya has a broad late-night choice, while evenings in Hua Hin centre on the night market, which the Tourism Authority of Thailand lists among the town's draws.

Getting there from Bangkok

The Tourism Authority of Thailand puts Pattaya about 150 km south-east of Bangkok, roughly two hours by road: see Suvarnabhumi airport to Pattaya. For Hua Hin, on the other side of the Gulf, it lists train, bus and car, and Hua Hin City Municipality puts the town about 195 km from Bangkok.

Which is easier depends on where in Bangkok you start, your luggage and the current timetable. Compare door-to-door options for your travel day rather than relying on a general drive time.

Weather and season

Both towns are on the Gulf of Thailand, on opposite shores, so read each town's forecast separately. In the Thai Meteorological Department's 1981–2010 normals for Hua Hin, December to February are the driest months and October the wettest, at 246.2 mm, while September averages 120.4 mm there against 204.7 mm in Pattaya. Pattaya's own months are in the best time to visit.

On either coast, sea conditions can change from one day to the next, so follow the beach flags.

Families and couples

Families who want plenty of wet-day options get more alternatives in Pattaya. Choose a base away from the busiest central streets and allow for rides across town: see where to stay. Families happy with a resort, a beach and early dinners may find Hua Hin easier.

Couples can use either. Pattaya suits a pair who want something new each day; Hua Hin suits those who want the hotel and the coast to be the holiday. If you are still deciding whether Pattaya suits you at all, read is Pattaya worth visiting.

Questions

Is Hua Hin quieter than Pattaya?

In its daily rhythm, yes: a stay there is less about hopping between big attractions. It is not a secluded beach, though: Hua Hin has a night market and restaurants, and it simply makes a calm routine easier to keep.

Which is cheaper, Pattaya or Hua Hin?

Neither reliably. Both range from guesthouses to luxury resorts. Compare the same dates and room standard, then add the full transfer from Bangkok and the rides you will actually take: a cheap room far from your plans can cancel out the saving.

Can I split a trip between Pattaya and Hua Hin?

Yes, but they are not neighbouring beach stops. The road between them goes around the top of the Gulf, about five hours by coach, so treat the move as a travel day. A split makes most sense on a longer trip, when a slower second half is the point.

Is there a ferry between Pattaya and Hua Hin?

No ferry could be confirmed when this was checked on 1 October 2026: the catamaran from Pattaya's Bali Hai Pier stopped during the pandemic, its operator asked in 2021 to end its contract with the port, and the booking site 12Go showed no ferries. By road, Roong Reuang Coach listed one coach a day each way, about five hours, at 526 baht a seat.
