What the temple is
DASTA, the government's agency for the Pattaya tourism area, describes Wat Huay Yai as an old temple built on land given by a couple from Ban Huay Yai, with its consecrated boundaries granted by royal decree on 5 May 1843.
The temple is known for its late abbot, Phra Phattarakitwiboon, called Luang Phor Kan: his body is kept in a glass coffin in the temple, and visitors attach gold leaf to a life-size statue of him. DASTA also mentions chanting for long life, from an old belief, as part of the temple's practice.
Visiting
The temple is inland, in Huay Yai subdistrict east of the Pattaya bay, on the road towards Phanom Sarakham. It is off the baht-bus routes: go by taxi, ride-hailing car or your own transport, and arrange the ride back.
Dress and behave as at any working temple: covered shoulders and knees, shoes off before you enter a hall, and quiet during prayers. See Thai etiquette.
Who it suits
It suits visitors interested in Thai village temples and local devotion, away from the city. If you want one temple close to the beach, Wat Chaimongkhon or Big Buddha Hill are nearer.
