Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai)

Big Buddha Hill — Wat Phra Yai — is one of Pattaya's most iconic free sights, crowning Pratumnak Hill between the city centre and Jomtien. A colourful, seven-headed naga (serpent) staircase of around 100 steps climbs to an 18-metre gold-painted seated Buddha that has watched over the bay since the 1970s, ringed by smaller Buddha images representing the days of the week, prayer bells and incense. Because it sits on the same hill as the famous Pattaya Viewpoint, the two pair naturally into a short Pratumnak mini-tour. As a place of worship, modest dress is expected — cover your shoulders and knees — and you should behave quietly and remove shoes where signed. Get there by Grab, songthaew or scooter; there's parking at the top, and the climb up the naga steps is short but can be hot at midday, so early morning or late afternoon is the sweet spot for both temperature and light.
