Pattaya Insider record

Thailand packs an extraordinary amount into one country — Bangkok’s temples and street food, the laid-back mountains of the north, the white-sand islands of two coasts, and beach cities like Pattaya all within easy reach. This is the quick, honest overview to help you plan.

The regions at a glance

  • Bangkok & central — the capital, plus the historic ruins of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.
  • The east coast — Pattaya, Koh Samet, Koh Chang and Koh Kood, closest to Bangkok.
  • The Gulf islands — Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, off the southeast.
  • The Andaman coast — Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe and Khao Lak, with the most dramatic scenery.
  • The north — Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai and Mae Hong Son: mountains, temples and cooler air.

When to go

The cool, dry season (November to February) is the most comfortable nationwide and the peak season. March to May is hot. The wet season (June to October) brings rain but lower prices — the Gulf and Andaman coasts have slightly different rain patterns, so check your specific island.

Getting around

Domestic flights are cheap and fast for long hops; trains and buses connect the mainland; ferries link the islands. In cities use the BTS/MRT in Bangkok, songthaews and Grab elsewhere, and rent scooters where you are confident.

Money & budget

The currency is the Thai baht. Thailand suits every budget — from street food and guesthouses to luxury resorts. Carry cash for markets, street food and transport; cards work at hotels, malls and bigger restaurants.

Visas

Many nationalities get a visa exemption on arrival, with longer-stay and special visas available. Rules change, so verify the current requirements for your passport with official Thai sources before travelling.

Food

Thailand is one of the world’s great food destinations — fiery som tam, fragrant curries, fresh seafood and endless street food. Eat where the locals queue.

Where to go

New to Thailand? Pair Bangkok with a beach — Pattaya for ease and value, Phuket or Krabi for the Andaman, or Koh Samui for the Gulf. Add Chiang Mai for the north.
