Pattaya to Koh Chang: Transport, Ferry and Trip Planning

Koh Chang is an overnight onward trip from Pattaya, not a practical day excursion. Every normal route combines several hours on the road to Trat, a vehicle ferry, and a final journey from the island pier to your accommodation. The route is straightforward when sold as one package, but fragmented tickets can leave you arranging the last transfer yourself.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Koh Chang as Thailand’s second-largest island and the main destination in the Koh Chang Marine National Park group. Its size is the reason to stay several nights: the beaches and hotels are distributed along a long west-coast road rather than clustered around the ferry landing.

The three useful ways to travel

Combined transfer and ferry

This is the easiest option for most visitors without a car. Current route platforms list bus-and-ferry and minivan-and-ferry combinations from Pattaya. Boonsiri’s booking system also exposes a package from its Pattaya office to Koh Chang hotels on selectable dates.

Read the inclusion list before paying. “To Koh Chang” can mean the mainland pier, the island pier or a hotel drop-off. A complete package should state:

• the exact Pattaya pickup point;
• the road vehicle type;
• whether the ferry ticket is included;
• the luggage allowance;
• whether the final island transfer reaches your named hotel; and
• what happens if a delayed road vehicle misses the planned sailing.

Private car with driver

A private transfer costs more but removes shared-vehicle pickup loops and gives greater control over rest stops. It works well for two or more travellers with luggage, for an early departure, or when the hotel lies far south on Koh Chang.

Ask whether the quoted vehicle travels onto the ferry and continues to the hotel or drops you at a pier. Those are materially different services. Confirm the total price in writing, including ferry charges, waiting, parking and the return arrangement.

Self-drive

Normal vehicle ferries make self-driving possible, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the island remains accessible through the regular ferry routes year-round. The limiting questions are the rental contract and the island roads.

Get written permission from the rental company for ferry and island use. Check what the insurance excludes, photograph the car before boarding and keep enough fuel for the onward drive. Koh Chang’s west-coast road includes hills and bends; a driver uncomfortable with steep tropical roads should use a transfer instead.

How long should you allow?

Treat the journey as most of a travel day. Pickup rounds, road traffic, rest stops, ferry queues and the distance from the island pier to the hotel all vary. A beach in the south of the west coast takes longer to reach than accommodation near the northern ferry side.

Leave Pattaya in the morning and avoid committing to a non-refundable activity on arrival day. Book at least two nights, with three or four providing a much better return on the transfer. A one-night stay produces two long travel days around a very short island visit.

Choose the hotel before the ticket

Koh Chang is too large for “any hotel” to mean the same transfer time. White Sand Beach is among the first major west-coast areas reached from the northern ferry side. Klong Prao and Kai Bae lie farther south, while more remote accommodation can add another substantial road segment.

Select the beach and property first, then confirm that the transfer operator serves it. If a package excludes the hotel leg, ask the accommodation how guests normally arrive from the ferry and what a late arrival changes.

Ferry and weather checks

The Trat destination page says normal ferry routes keep Koh Chang accessible throughout the year. That does not guarantee every sailing in poor conditions. Reconfirm the pickup and crossing the day before departure and keep the operator’s contact available.

During wetter periods, build flexibility into boat trips and outdoor plans after arrival. Do not infer that a ferry delay entitles you to miss a hotel cancellation deadline; transport and accommodation are separate contracts unless sold together.

Koh Chang versus easier Pattaya islands

Choose Koh Chang when you want a larger, greener island and can spare several nights. For a simple beach day, Koh Larn is far easier from Pattaya. Koh Samet is a more compact onward beach break, though it also deserves an overnight stay.

Booking checklist

Before paying, save the operator name, pickup map, departure time, luggage rule, ferry inclusion and hotel-drop boundary. Reconfirm the service one day before travel. Keep the hotel name in Thai and share it with the driver.
