In this guide
Thailand’s correct tourist entry route depends on the passport, arrival date and intended stay. As of 29 July 2026, the Department of Consular Affairs still published the existing 60-day exemption list for eligible passports. A shorter replacement had Cabinet approval but was not triggered merely by that approval.
The official May notice says the revised scheme starts 15 days after the required Ministry of Interior announcements appear in the Royal Gazette. Until that commencement point, travellers should use the effective list, not a news headline about the future rule.
This guide is arranged around the decision a traveller actually has to make: enter without a pre-issued visa, use visa on arrival where eligible, or obtain a Tourist Visa before departure.
Start with the passport and travel date
Check the Department of Consular Affairs list for the exact passport nationality or territory. Do not infer eligibility from residence, departure airport or a companion’s passport.
Then check whether the May 2026 revision has commenced. The approved structure would revoke the broad 60-day exemption, provide a 30-day tourism exemption to 54 countries and territories, create a 15-day exemption for three, and reduce the visa-on-arrival list to four. The same official notice protects permission already granted under the old scheme until that stamped stay expires.
Those numbers describe an approved future arrangement, not permission to choose whichever period suits the trip. If the Gazette notices appear, count the stated 15-day interval and use the scheme effective on arrival.
Option 1: visa exemption
Visa exemption can fit a short tourism trip when the passport appears on the effective list and the planned departure falls inside the allowance. There is no visa application before travel, but the traveller still seeks admission at the checkpoint.
Carry evidence that makes the trip coherent:
- passport validity that meets the applicable rule;
- return or onward travel within the expected permission;
- the first Thai accommodation and a credible itinerary;
- access to funds required for the entry category; and
- the separate TDAC confirmation.
An exemption stamp is not a reusable residence arrangement. Repeated short entries can attract questions about whether the real purpose remains tourism. The visa-runs guide explains why leaving and immediately returning is not a guaranteed extension method.
Option 2: visa on arrival
Visa on arrival is a separate programme with its own nationality list, stay period and border procedure. It is not another name for visa exemption.
Check the current official list before relying on it, particularly because the approved 2026 revision would sharply reduce eligibility. A passport that is exempt does not need to use visa on arrival merely because an airport has a VOA counter. A passport on neither current list normally needs the correct visa before travel.
Keep travel, accommodation and financial evidence ready. Payment at the checkpoint does not remove the immigration officer’s authority to examine eligibility and purpose.
Option 3: Tourist Visa
A Tourist Visa suits a traveller who is not exempt, wants documented permission before departure, or expects a tourism stay that does not fit the effective exemption.
The Department of Consular Affairs publishes these core terms:
- single-entry visa validity of three months;
- multiple-entry visa validity of six months;
- up to 60 days of stay per entry; and
- financial evidence of 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family in its central guidance.
Validity and stay are different clocks. A single-entry visa valid for three months normally must be used for entry within that period; it does not grant three months in Thailand. The permitted-until date is set at entry and should be checked before leaving passport control.
The central Consular Affairs page lists a 1,000-baht single-entry and 5,000-baht multiple-entry fee, but overseas missions charge in local currency and publish their own application fee. Use the amount shown by the embassy responsible for the application rather than converting the central figure yourself.
Applying through Thai e-Visa
Start at https://www.thaievisa.go.th/. The official process is to create an account, complete the application, upload documents, pay the fee displayed for the case, wait for processing and receive the confirmation by email.
The responsible embassy can require proof that the applicant is physically present or resident in its jurisdiction. Document lists also vary. Common items in current official mission guidance include the passport biodata page, a recent photograph, proof of current location, travel booking, accommodation and financial evidence.
Apply with enough time for the handling mission’s published schedule. Do not buy non-refundable arrangements on the assumption that a submitted or paid application will be approved. Carry the issued e-Visa confirmation when travelling.
Extending a tourist stay in Pattaya
Current embassy guidance says a Tourist Visa stay may be extended by up to 30 days, but approval belongs to Immigration. An extension is neither automatic nor guaranteed for the full period requested.
The Immigration Bureau directory lists Chonburi Immigration’s Pattaya office at:
75/265 Moo 12, Jomtien Beach Road Soi 5, Nong Prue, Bang Lamung, Chon Buri 20150
Confirm current service hours and required documents before attending. The usual official framework includes a TM.7 application, passport and relevant stamp copies, a recent photograph and the published 1,900-baht application fee. Local accommodation evidence or additional forms may be required.
Apply before the existing permission expires. After approval, read the new stamp and use its actual date for the departure reminder.
TDAC and admission are separate
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card does not grant visa status. A traveller using exemption, visa on arrival or a Tourist Visa still completes the TDAC under the current arrival rules.
Use the free Immigration Bureau service and file within three days before arrival, including the arrival date. The TDAC guide covers the official portal, group filings and corrections.
Admission remains discretionary even with a visa and TDAC. Keep evidence accessible and answer questions consistently with tourism.
Longer stays need a purpose-matched route
A longer permission is not automatically the correct one. Remote workers can review the DTV guide, while qualifying older applicants can compare the retirement visa options. Long-stay residents may also have 90-day reporting duties.
Tourist permission does not itself authorise ordinary employment. Choose a route from the real activity, not from the longest number shown on a comparison chart.
Do not plan around overstay
The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra publishes an overstay fine of 500 baht per day up to 20,000 baht. It also warns that an overstay exceeding 90 days can lead to deportation and a re-entry ban.
That cap is not a paid extension. Arrest while overstaying can create more serious consequences. Check the entry stamp immediately, set an earlier reminder and resolve any extension or departure issue before permission expires.
Decision checklist
Before booking:
- Check the exact passport on the effective official list.
- Verify whether the 2026 replacement scheme has commenced.
- Match the trip length and purpose to exemption, VOA or Tourist Visa.
- If applying, use only the official e-Visa portal and responsible embassy.
- Keep entry evidence and the separate TDAC confirmation ready.
- Treat extension as discretionary and overstay as unlawful.
For a quick passport-specific starting point, see Do I need a visa for Pattaya?. Recheck official sources close to departure because the approved 2026 exemption change can alter the correct route after this page’s update date.
This is general information, not legal advice. Visa eligibility, documents, fees and entry decisions depend on the passport, location, purpose and rules effective on the travel date.
Useful to know
- Passport nationality and issuing territory determine which entry route is available.
- Visa validity is the period in which it can be used for entry; it is not the permitted stay.
- A visa, exemption or visa on arrival does not guarantee admission.
- The TDAC is a separate free arrival declaration, not an entry permission.
- Extension approval is discretionary, so do not book beyond the existing stamp on the assumption that one will be granted.
Frequently asked questions
Is Thailand's visa exemption 60 days or 30 days in 2026?
Use the rule effective on the arrival date. The Department of Consular Affairs list checked on 29 July 2026 still published a 60-day exemption for eligible passports. Cabinet approved a replacement with 30-day and 15-day groups, but the official notice says it begins only 15 days after the required Royal Gazette publication.
What is the difference between visa exemption and a Tourist Visa?
Visa exemption lets an eligible passport holder seek entry without a visa under the effective scheme. A Tourist Visa is approved before travel for tourism and currently permits up to 60 days per entry. Both remain subject to the immigration officer's decision and the evidence presented at the border.
Can I apply for a Thailand Tourist Visa online?
Eligible applicants can use the official Thai e-Visa portal. Create an account, complete the application, upload the documents requested for the responsible embassy, pay the displayed mission fee and wait for the emailed decision. Do not treat submission or payment as approval.
Where do I apply for a tourist extension in Pattaya?
The Immigration Bureau directory places Chonburi Immigration's Pattaya service at 75/265 Moo 12 on Jomtien Beach Road Soi 5. Confirm current hours, appointment arrangements and document requirements with the office before attending, and apply before the existing permission expires.
Does the TDAC replace a Tourist Visa?
No. The TDAC is a separate arrival declaration. Complete it within the official window even when travelling with a Tourist Visa or under visa exemption, but never use a TDAC confirmation as evidence that a visa requirement has been satisfied.
