In this guide
Thailand’s 2026 entry position has two layers: the scheme currently in force and a shorter replacement that has been approved but was not yet effective in the latest official implementation update used here. Travellers need to separate those layers, then check the rule again before departure.
The current published exemption allows eligible ordinary-passport holders up to 60 days for tourism and permitted short-term purposes. A revised scheme would give 59 nationalities a 30-day exemption, two nationalities 15 days and three nationalities visa on arrival. The Thai Government’s 19 July 2026 update said the necessary Ministry of Interior announcements still awaited Royal Gazette publication and would take effect 15 days after publication. Existing conditions remain until commencement.
This is legal and immigration guidance, not a guarantee of admission. The officer at the border decides entry using the rule and evidence applying on that day.
Work from the effective rule
Do not use Cabinet approval as the arrival date. Use this sequence:
- Check the latest Thai Government or Royal Thai embassy notice.
- Confirm whether the revised measure has been published in the Royal Gazette.
- If published, identify its stated commencement date.
- Check the exact passport against the current list.
- Match the permitted stay to the planned departure date.
The distinction matters for anyone planning more than 30 days. A traveller who books around a 60-day assumption may need a tourist visa or a shorter itinerary if the revised exemption starts before arrival.
Our summary was checked on 26 July 2026. It cannot predict a later Gazette publication, so re-check near departure and again if the trip date changes.
Visa exemption, visa on arrival and Tourist Visa
These are different routes.
| Route | When it may fit | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Visa exemption | Passport is on the effective exemption list and the trip fits its allowance | No pre-issued visa and no guarantee of entry |
| Visa on arrival | Passport and purpose meet that separate programme | Different list, permitted stay and process |
| Tourist Visa | Traveller applies before departure for a tourism stay | Application and admission remain subject to official requirements |
A single-entry Tourist Visa permits a stay of up to 60 days according to current Royal Thai embassy guidance. Applicants may need passport validity, travel evidence, accommodation and financial evidence. The exact documents and fee depend on the mission handling the application.
Use the official Thai e-Visa portal to start an eligible online application. Do not assume a universal processing time. Apply from the place and within the timing accepted by the responsible embassy, upload the requested evidence and wait for approval before treating travel as visa-backed.
Passport and entry evidence
A visa exemption is not an unconditional right to enter. Be ready to show:
- a passport meeting the applicable validity requirement;
- onward or return travel consistent with the permitted stay;
- accommodation or an address in Thailand;
- a credible tourism plan; and
- access to funds required for the entry route.
A July 2026 Thai Government reminder says proof of funds is an existing immigration requirement rather than a new policy. It also notes that official sources have displayed different amounts for visa-exempt entry, including individual and family figures. That is a reason to check the embassy responsible for the passport, not to pick the lowest figure found online.
Frequent entries, a one-way ticket or answers inconsistent with tourism can prompt more questions. Keep documents accessible and answer accurately. A paid flight or hotel does not compel the officer to admit a traveller.
Complete the TDAC separately
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is not a visa, exemption or extension. It is an online arrival declaration. The Immigration Bureau FAQ says foreign travellers should submit it within three days before arrival, including the arrival date.
Use only the official system, which is free. A family or group can make a group submission, but each traveller still has individual information. Save the confirmation where it remains available without mobile data.
If travel details change, follow the official FAQ’s update process. Completing the TDAC early does not lock in an immigration allowance or bypass document checks. See the full TDAC guide for field-by-field help.
Extending a tourist stay
An extension is an application, not an entitlement. Royal Thai embassy guidance says a tourist may seek up to 30 additional days at the Immigration Bureau’s discretion. Thai Government guidance lists:
- the TM.7 application form;
- a copy of the passport;
- copies of the relevant visa and latest arrival stamp where applicable;
- a recent 4 x 6 centimetre photograph; and
- the ฿1,900 application fee.
Local offices can require current accommodation or registration evidence and may change queue or appointment arrangements. Confirm the Pattaya-area office process before attending, bring originals and copies, and apply while the existing permission remains valid.
Paying the fee does not guarantee the full requested period. Check the stamp before leaving the counter and calculate the new departure deadline from the actual permission granted.
Staying longer than a tourist visit
Do not chain exemptions as a substitute for the correct status. A person planning work, study, retirement, family residence or remote work should examine the category designed for that purpose.
Pattaya Insider has separate guides to the Destination Thailand Visa, retirement visas and education visas. Eligibility, permitted activity, financial evidence and reporting duties differ. Choose from the intended activity first, not solely from the longest advertised number of days.
No tourist route grants permission to work merely because the stay is long. Employment and work-authorisation rules are separate.
Overstay is not an extension
The authorised-until date in the passport matters. Official Thai guidance lists an overstay fine of ฿500 per day, capped at ฿20,000. For a person who reports voluntarily, more than 90 days of overstay can trigger a one-year re-entry ban; the published periods escalate to three, five and ten years for longer overstays.
Being arrested while overstaying carries stricter consequences, including bans starting with shorter overstay periods. The fine cap therefore does not make a long overstay a fixed-price alternative to legal status.
Check the entry stamp immediately after arrival. Before any extension deadline, leave time to solve missing documents or closures. If a mistake has already occurred, obtain current advice from Immigration or a qualified professional rather than waiting for departure day.
A pre-departure checklist
Seven days before travel:
- Re-check whether the revised exemption has commenced.
- Confirm the passport’s exact route and permitted stay.
- Check passport validity and names on all bookings.
- Keep onward travel, accommodation and funds evidence accessible.
- Complete the TDAC within the official submission window.
- Use the e-Visa approval, if required, exactly as issued.
- Calculate a departure reminder from the entry permission, not the return ticket assumption.
For Indian passports, the Pattaya guide for Indian travellers tracks the New Delhi embassy position alongside the pending scheme.
Bottom line
Eligible travellers still had a published 60-day exemption in the official sources checked on 26 July 2026. The approved replacement was waiting for Royal Gazette publication and a 15-day commencement period. Confirm the effective rule for the passport before flying, complete the TDAC separately, carry credible entry evidence and never use overstay as a planning tool.
Useful to know
- Cabinet approval alone does not start the revised exemption; the official update specifies Gazette publication and a 15-day commencement period.
- A visa or visa exemption does not guarantee admission: an immigration officer makes the entry decision.
- The TDAC is a free arrival declaration and does not replace a visa where one is required.
- Proof-of-funds amounts can differ by route and official source, so check the rule for the exact passport and entry category.
Frequently asked questions
How long can I stay in Thailand visa-free in 2026?
It depends on the passport and the rule effective on the entry date. Eligible passports remain under the published 60-day scheme in the official sources checked on 26 July 2026. A revised scheme would give 59 nationalities 30 days, but the Government said it awaited Royal Gazette publication and would commence 15 days afterwards.
Do I need a visa before travelling to Pattaya?
Check whether the passport appears on the current exemption or visa-on-arrival list and whether the intended stay fits that allowance. If it does not, apply for the appropriate visa before travel. The official e-Visa portal routes applications, but document and fee requirements depend on the applicant's location, nationality and selected visa category.
Can I extend a tourist stay in Thailand?
An eligible tourist may apply to Immigration, but an extension is not automatic. Official guidance lists the TM.7 form, passport copies, a recent photograph and a ฿1,900 fee, while embassy guidance describes a possible extension of up to 30 days at the officer's discretion. Confirm the current local office process and apply before permission expires.
Is the TDAC the same as a visa?
No. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is a free online arrival declaration and grants no immigration status. The official FAQ says a foreign traveller should submit it within three days before arrival, including the arrival date. Complete it through the Immigration Bureau system and keep its confirmation alongside, not instead of, the passport and entry documents.
What happens if I overstay in Thailand?
Official Thai guidance lists a ฿500 daily fine capped at ฿20,000. A foreigner who reports voluntarily after more than 90 days can also face a one-year re-entry ban, escalating for longer periods; being arrested produces stricter consequences. Do not treat the cap as permission to stay. Contact Immigration and resolve status before the authorised period ends.
