Khao Kheow Open Zoo

Khao Kheow Open Zoo is one of Thailand's largest and best-regarded zoos — a genuinely open zoo north of Pattaya where more than 8,000 animals across 300-plus species live in spacious, naturalistic enclosures rather than cramped cages. Set over roughly 800 hectares (about 2,000 acres) of forested hills in Si Racha, it's a proper half-day out in nature. Highlights include big cats (tigers, lions, leopards) in large habitats, an Australian zone with koalas, kangaroos and red pandas reached by a free tram, and crowd-pleasers like capybaras, sloths and the famous baby pygmy hippo, Moo Deng, who turned the zoo into a viral sensation. Because the grounds are so vast, most visitors ride the tram, hire a golf cart or drive their own car through the open sections. Foreigner tickets run around ฿350 for adults and ฿120 for children, with under-95cm kids free; the zoo opens daily 08:00–17:00, and a separate Night Safari runs Friday to Sunday from about 18:30. It's a firm family favourite and a strong bad-weather or nature-fix alternative to the beach — just budget for the drive (roughly 45 minutes from central Pattaya), bring water and sun protection, and don't try to see it all on foot.

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden

Nong Nooch is a garden complex south of Pattaya with formal landscapes, botanical collections, Dinosaur Valley and optional shows. Choose a few priority zones, compare walking with internal transport and check the ticket inclusions before booking.

Khao Chi Chan (Buddha Mountain)

Khao Chi Chan — 'Buddha Mountain' — is one of the most striking free sights in the Pattaya area: a colossal image of the seated Buddha, roughly 109 metres tall and 70 metres wide, laser-etched into a sheer limestone cliff and inlaid with gold. Commissioned in 1996 to mark the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's reign, it depicts the Buddha in the Dhyana (meditation) posture and is one of the largest Buddha images in the world. The setting does a lot of the work: the golden figure rises above landscaped gardens and a reflecting lake, with space to sit, take photos and take it in — a genuinely serene counterpoint to Pattaya's energy. It's free to enter (donations welcome), quick to see, and sits right beside the Silverlake Vineyard, making the two an easy paired half-day. Being carved into the cliff, it's an outdoor, open-air site with limited shade, so morning light is both cooler and best for photos, and respectful dress is expected as it remains a revered religious image. It's a drive south of the city — around 25–30 minutes toward Na Chom Thian and Sattahip — and while it's more a photogenic stop than a long visit, the sheer scale makes it well worth the detour, especially combined with the vineyard, Viharn Sien or Nong Nooch nearby.
