Best Beaches in Pattaya and Koh Larn

Pattaya is not one beach. The mainland gives you easy food, shade and a ride home whenever you want; Koh Larn gives you paler sand and clearer water at the cost of a ferry timetable and island transfer. The common mistake is choosing by photograph alone. A beautiful remote bay can be the wrong answer for small children, while a busy beach beside the pier can be exactly right for a simple first island day.

Start with the ferry question. If the answer is no, use Jomtien for range, Wong Amat for calm or Cosy Beach for a short cove visit. If the answer is yes, Samae has the strongest scenery, Tien the best balance and Tawaen the least complicated arrival. Seven shores for seven different days

Samae Beach

Samae is the island choice when the beach itself justifies the journey. Its long southwest-facing bay has pale sand, clear swimming and green hills behind it, with loungers and food available without overwhelming the strand. The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Thai trip guidance names Samae among Koh Larn’s principal beaches and separately confirms the island’s broad food and accommodation provision. The public ferry to Koh Larn was ฿40 each way in July 2026, followed by a songthaew of roughly ฿70 from Naban. That is the longest routine island transfer, and tour groups still arrive. Go early, agree the return pickup and verify the last ferry before relaxing.

Tien Beach

Tien balances the qualities many visitors want: water clearer than the mainland, less boat activity than Tawaen, a sandy central swimming area and enough kitchens and chairs to stay comfortable. A songthaew from Naban was about ฿50 after the public ferry, with rocky ends better suited to careful snorkelling than swimming. It suits couples and families who can manage one extra transfer. The hilly road deserves respect, especially for inexperienced scooter riders, and monsoon conditions can quickly change an otherwise calm bay.

Jomtien Beach

Jomtien is the honest mainland all-rounder: a long strand with room for walking, swimming, chairs, food and watersports, plus easy access from a huge range of accommodation. The water is warm and generally usable but green rather than turquoise, and runoff can cloud it after heavy rain. Families appreciate the shallow profile and ability to leave without a ferry schedule. Choose it for an uncomplicated full day, not an island postcard, and inspect conditions before entering after storms.

Wong Amat Beach

At the northern end of the bay, Wong Amat feels calmer and more upmarket because resorts and high-end condos back the sand instead of a continuous traffic road. Softer sand, fewer crowds and a gentler mood suit couples and families staying in Naklua. Public access is less obvious than at Jomtien and the surrounding district becomes quiet after dinner. It is a poor choice for nightlife-first travellers but one of the best mainland answers when the ability to walk from room to water matters.

Cosy Beach

This sheltered Pratumnak cove is the efficient choice for a quick swim near the city. The smaller scale and headland setting feel more intimate than Jomtien, and it combines naturally with Big Buddha Hill or Pattaya Viewpoint. Space and facilities are limited, and the approach down the hill is steeper than a flat beachfront promenade. It suits couples and Pratumnak residents who need two relaxed hours. Large groups, long-distance walkers and anyone carrying extensive beach gear will find Jomtien easier.

Tawaen Beach

Tawaen is Koh Larn’s front door: ferries, loungers, food stalls, banana boats and other watersports cluster around a roughly 750-metre beach. That concentration makes it the simplest island option for first-timers and families who want toilets, food and transport immediately. It also brings the island’s heaviest crowds and boat noise between late morning and mid-afternoon. Use Tawaen for convenience, or land there and transfer to Tien or Samae. Photograph rented equipment before use and never leave a passport as security.

Naklua Beach

Naklua’s shoreline belongs on a coastal guide for character, not swimming. Fishing boats, gear, fresh-market seafood and a more local rhythm replace rows of loungers. The sand can be narrow and the water near working boats is not the place for a recreational dip; Wong Amat is the better swim nearby. Visit for a market meal, sunset and a look at the area’s fishing identity, perhaps alongside the Sanctuary of Truth. Anyone promising children a conventional beach day should choose elsewhere.

The shortest route to the right sand

With half a day, pick the nearest good mainland beach: Wong Amat from northern hotels, Cosy Beach from Pratumnak or Jomtien from the south. With a full clear-weather day, take the early ferry and choose Samae for scenery, Tien for balance or Tawaen for minimum friction.

On Koh Larn, confirm the last ferry as soon as you arrive and keep enough cash for songthaews, chairs and food. On every beach, swim to conditions rather than reputation. Wind, rain and boat traffic matter more on the day than any fixed ranking.
