Samae Beach

Samae Beach is a developed west-coast beach on Koh Larn, suited to travellers who want a longer strip of sand without using the island’s principal arrival beach as their base. DASTA’s official tourism description calls Samae quieter than the island’s other beaches, while Thailand Tourism Directory describes it as almost a kilometre long and visible from an island viewpoint.

Those descriptions support a choice, not a guarantee. Samae can still have groups, chairs, kitchens and water activity. The practical advantage is room and relative calm; the cost is a separate transfer after the boat reaches Koh Larn.

What the beach is like

Chon Buri’s provincial tourism office describes Koh Larn as having white sand, clear water and swimming, snorkelling and watersports. Samae gives visitors a substantial west-side setting in which to use those island qualities. Its scale makes it more forgiving than a small cove when several groups arrive.

Avoid unsupported superlatives. The previous version called Samae the island’s whitest and clearest beach and promised a particular sandy slope. The checked official sources do not establish those rankings. On arrival, inspect the actual sand, water, activity lanes and shade before deciding where to sit.

DASTA’s “quieter” description is most useful when comparing Samae with Tawaen Beach. It does not mean silent or undeveloped. Choose Samae for a managed beach day with some breathing room, not for isolation.

Swimming and seasonal conditions

Swim in a clearly marked area and keep out of boat or activity lanes. A calm appearance from shore does not show every current. UK travel advice says Thailand uses warning flags and notes strong riptides, rough monsoon seas and jellyfish, particularly during the May-to-October rainy season.

Obey a red flag and local instructions. If the swimming boundary is unclear or powered craft are moving through it, remain ashore or choose another section. The beach and sea safety guide gives a compact checklist.

Do not plan snorkelling around an online promise of daily visibility. Wind, rain, boat movement and tide all affect what is possible. Ask an operator where activity is currently allowed, and never surrender a passport as security for equipment; the FCDO specifically warns against doing so.

Chairs, meals and other costs

The checked sources do not publish current chair, lounger, shower or menu prices. The inherited page’s fixed ranges have therefore been removed. Ask for the total before accepting a chair or service, including whether an umbrella or food order is part of the arrangement.

Samae is developed enough to plan for services, but no directory entry proves that every operator opens daily. Carry water, sun protection, cash and any medicine required. Tourism Authority advice for Pattaya stresses frequent sunscreen use, and an island beach offers little shelter while moving between operators.

For jet skis or other motorised activity, read the jet-ski guide, photograph the equipment and agree the duration and price in writing.

Ferry and island transfer

Start at Bali Hai Pier. Pattaya Mail reported that the scheduled public-boat fare increased to ฿40 per person each way on 10 April 2026. DASTA describes the crossing as about 45 minutes.

That ticket does not take you to Samae. After landing at Na Baan or another operating arrival side, arrange island transport and confirm whether the quote covers one passenger or a private journey. No reliable official shared-ride tariff was found, so this page does not repeat the old ฿70 claim.

A hired scooter is not the automatic budget answer. UK travel advice records Thailand’s high motorcycle accident risk, licence requirements and insurance limits. Use one only with the correct licence, insurance and helmet; otherwise take local transport.

Build the return before relaxing

Photograph the live return board at the pier used and note whether the intended boat departs from that same side. Work backwards to allow for the cross-island ride. DASTA’s page contains an old ฿30 fare and an undated timetable, so its geography and crossing duration are useful but its schedule is not.

Choose Samae when a west-coast beach and a separate transfer feel worthwhile. Choose Tawaen for the simplest arrival, Tien Beach for a smaller west-side stop with a documented footbridge, or Nual Beach when a rocky, quieter setting is acceptable.
