Tawaen Beach is Koh Larn’s main activity beach and one of its public-boat arrival sides. That makes it the easiest base for a first visit when food, chairs and transport fallback matter more than quiet. DASTA’s official tourism page specifically associates Tawaen with shallow-water coral viewing, while provincial material lists swimming and powered watersports around Koh Larn.

The same evidence explains the trade-off. Tawaen is not a low-traffic cove. Boats, activities and commercial service are central to how it operates, so the safe swimming decision depends on visible separation rather than the colour of the water alone.

Choose Tawaen for convenience

Tawaen suits a visitor who wants to arrive, inspect one developed beach and stay if conditions fit. It also gives a clear reference point for moving to nearby Tong Lang Beach or arranging transport elsewhere.

Do not choose it for guaranteed solitude. The previous page supplied precise crowd hours and claimed that weekends doubled visitor numbers without a dependable source. Those numbers have been removed. Arriving earlier may help operationally, but a group, delayed boat or holiday can change the beach at any time.

Thailand Tourism Directory and DASTA both establish Tawaen as a significant Koh Larn beach. Neither publishes a dependable daily crowd forecast. Treat the scene you find as the deciding evidence.

Swimming around active craft

Use only a clearly marked swimming area and remain inside its boundary. DASTA’s listing of snorkelling and island watersports confirms that activity traffic belongs in the plan. If the separation between swimmers and powered craft is unclear, do not enter.

UK travel advice says to follow Thailand’s beach flags and warns about strong currents, rough monsoon seas and jellyfish, particularly from May to October. A red flag means no swimming. Calm-looking shallows are not permission to ignore a closure or cross an activity lane.

For snorkelling, ask where it is currently allowed and whether a guide, flotation aid or boat transfer is involved. The fact that official tourism material mentions coral does not guarantee good visibility or safe independent snorkelling every day.

Chairs, food and watersports

Tawaen has the broadest service expectation in this batch: food sellers, chairs, umbrellas and activity operators form part of the beach. The checked official sources do not, however, publish current prices or promise that every business opens daily.

Ask for the total before using a chair, shower, toilet, meal or piece of equipment. Clarify whether a chair requires a food order and whether a watersports quote is per person, per ride or per craft. Keep enough cash for the ferry and return transport separate from leisure spending.

Public boat: read the destination

Scheduled public boats depart Bali Hai Pier for Koh Larn. Pattaya Mail reported that the fare rose to ฿40 per person each way on 10 April 2026. DASTA describes the crossing as about 45 minutes and records services to both Na Baan and Tawaen.

Its published timetable and ฿30 price are outdated, so do not copy the listed times. Read the live departure board before buying or boarding. If the boat is going to Na Baan, Tawaen requires a separate island ride. Agree that price before leaving the arrival area.

When a Tawaen-side boat operates, confirm that the intended return also leaves from Tawaen. A traveller who reaches the island on one side and assumes every return uses the same pier can lose the safety margin.

Scooter versus local transport

Tawaen’s relative convenience makes a rented scooter unnecessary for many first-time visitors. The FCDO highlights Thailand’s high motorcycle accident rate and warns that licensing and insurance conditions matter. A helmet does not correct an invalid licence or excluded insurance.

Use island transport when nobody in the group is properly licensed and covered. If arranging a private vehicle, ask whether the price is for the entire trip or each passenger. No official island fare table was verified in this update.

A robust first-visit plan

Choose a morning public boat, photograph the return board, inspect Tawaen’s swimming zone and ask current service prices. Stay when the separation from craft is clear and the setup fits. If it is too active, use the beach as an arrival base and move to Tong Lang, Tien or Samae.

Tawaen works because it offers alternatives, not because every part of it is calm. Keep the return simple, protect the ferry money and let same-day conditions decide the swim.
